Surfing the edge

Considering the chaotic situation in South Africa (most probably other African countries as well, however, I follow more closely South African news since I lived there from 1996 — 1998), it often reminds me on Richard T. Pascale’s book Surfing the edge of chaos. In the book, Pascale distills (from the science of complexity) four principles that are inherently applicable to the living system of a business. The first two principles are:

1) Equilibrium is a precursor to death. When a living system is in a state of equilibrium, it is less responsive to changes occuring around it. This places it at maximum risk. 2) In the face of the threat, or when galvanized by a compelling opportunity, living things move toward a the edge of chaos. This condition evokes higher levels of mutation and experimentation, and fresh new solutions are more likely to be found.

Applying these principles to the current situation of South Africa - considering the permanent threat of violent attacks [1] (the text is still accessible at this page), the all-around threat of AIDS [*2] and the profound shake of deep values and behaviours through the transition from the Apartheid system to a democratic system — it is reasonable to assume that South Africans (generalising here) are living on the edge of chaos. The remaining question is if this state of turmoil emerges into newness and innovativeness. I am highly interested in this thought and I believe that we will see some exceptional outcomes from this country soon (may this be music, businesses or whatever else).

China investing in its future

I am deeply respectful to Niels Bohr’s statement that ’prediction is difficult, especially if it involves the future’. Nevertheless, I am highly interested in anticipating future developments according to current information. At the recent gathering in Davos, statistical data about China’s expenditure on R&D has been released. According to a summary, ’[China’s] spending on basic R&D amounted to 11.72 billion yuan, up 33.7 percent, and that on application R&D 40.05 billion yuan, a rise of 28.6 percent from 2003, while the spending on experiment R &D totaled 144.87 billion yuan, an increase of 27 percent.’

If Lev’s results on the effect of R&D-intensive organisations on long-term performance and IPO-valuation (see also a previous post) are correct (and I assume so), than I predict a much faster growth of China’s economy than reported in Goldman Sachs’ report. The report says that China’s economy will be larger than the US by 2041.

Hype and Reality

The Gartner Hype Cycle is ’a graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and business application of specific technologies.’ A Hype Cycle is divided into 5 phases, each representing specific risks and opportunities (linked with the timing of those technologies). On Vinnie Mirchandani’s blog you can find such a cycle for emerging technologies (released 2005).

The interesting point, however, is on which information this graphical presentation is based. According to Gartner, it represents the assessment of CIOs around the world. This leads me to a recent publication from Peter Mika. In the paper, the author describes the extraction of a community-based ontology (based on the data available through del.icio.us). The striking result shows that the individual-related ontology beats the object-related ontology (which is an experts’ ontology). This outcome proves the importance of social processes within complex issues (such as forecasting). I would be highly interested to oppose Gartner’s Hype Cycles with a community-generated forecast.

Kathy Sierra from Creating Passionate Users writes about key findings in learning theory. She starts with:

Sad news from the rainbow nation: opera singer Deon van der Walt has been shot by his father on the vineyard in Paarl (near Cape Town). I have been there a few years ago. Although I was too late for visiting the vineyard, I bought their wine (Veenwouden). OECD policy conference in Ferrara

Last week, I have been to the OECD policy conference ’Intellectual Assets and Innovation: Value creation in the Knowledge Econcomy’. On the one side, it was interesting to meet many of the leading academics in this field, on the other hand, this conference was disappointing since this community seemed to me as highly isolated from real business impact. Baruch Lev was one of the exceptions to this, and I really like his reasoning and questioning during the sessions.

Some interesting thoughts from the speakers:
. Hal R. Varian termed distributed small offices ’Micro-Multinationals’
. Several Japanes speakers stressed the link between CSR and intangible capital reporting
. Robert M. Hunt spoke about the link between innovation rates and job density (through knowledge spillovers)
. Alison Thomas introduced the audience to the Schroder experiment and the XBRL standard. The XBRL standard is meant to ’provide an identifying tag for each individual item of data. This is computer readable. For example, company net profit has its own unique tag.’

Baruch Lev made an interesting point at the farewell panel: interest in intangible assets reporting in the US is almost non-existent. For instance, the financial accounting standards board (FASB) has released a note, that they have put the propsal ’Disclosures About Intangible Assets’ on ice:
’This project was inactive and at its January 14, 2004 meeting, the Board removed this project from its research agenda.’

CC-Musik in Wired

The new issue of the Wired magazine contains a CD with a a collection of 16 songs produced under the Creative Commons Licence. This article is about the CDs history and it starts: "By nature, musicians are thieves."
Still, as open source software and open access and Creative Commons and and ..., is hyped, it is far from straighforward to convince musicians: "t wasn't easy. When we started a full year ago, we thought we'd just reach out to some favorite bands and musicians, explain the idea, and make it happen. So we made a few calls. Some artists got the idea and signed on in a flash, inspiring others to do so, too (thanks again, Mr. Byrne). Others came tantalizingly close, only to drop out at the last moment (maybe next time, Mr. Z). After reaching out to 20 acts, then 30, and finally 50, navigating the dicey obstacles of label politics, legal exposure, and lost revenue, only the bravest coughed up a song (we're still waiting for that track, Mr. Moby). In the end, we got through to 16 wonderful artists who contributed brilliant material."

Diskussionsrunde

Ich war heute bei einer Diskussionsrunde der Computer Measurement Group eingeladen. Die Diskussion verlief friedlich, bis der Vertreter der Contentindustrie zum Jammern anfing. Gut so!

Meine Gedanken:
1) There are many signposts for change (regarding content that is digital) -> P2P, content creator = consumer, music pirates, law suits, discussion over patents etc.

2) New business models will evolve -> as a general rule, new models always embrace the old medium; the key is, that they offer additional convenience to customers that the old model could deliver; therefore, they are successful (scalability -> bible).
In software development, there is a general tendency to deploy open standards. Not so when it comes to content. Here, closed standards are used (iTunes only works with iPod, Microsoft wants to control the whole audio flow within its Longhorn OS etc).
The bosses of the content industry fear of course any new business models. They try to defend market shares with all means. The act according to:
- Destroy the business (if this doesnt work)
- Controll the business (if this doesnt work)
- Controll the users which are supporting the new models.

3) This leads us to control -> there are 3 possible forms:
- Physical layer -> cable, WLAN
- Logical layer -> standards (Lexmark excludes competitors from re-filling their printers as they say this is circumvention)
- Content layer -> Microsoft wants to control the content industry horizontally etc

4) Consequences on performance
- barrier to creativity and innovation
- where is the convenience (iTunes -> if they dont change, another company will take the business from them)
- artistic work was always based on existing knowledge/work; at the moment, this is almost impossible. Creative Commons is maybe a way out of this.

DRM is bad

... according to Cory Doctorow. In his article, he writes witty and meaningful about DRM and its impact on business and society. I paged through the entire speech and want to make the following reminders:
-) Schneier’s Law: any person can invent a security system so clever that she or he cannot think of how to break it. (however, Cory argues that DRM will fail technologically, since the customer receives the key, the ciper and the ciphertext; it is not so straight-foward, but the the key is more or less publicly known, at least to hardware suppliers).

-) Anticircumvention: this is really a critical flaw in recent legislation. Ok, the one side is, that it is illegal to break the copyrighted work, the make a tool that breaks it etc (-> see Ed Felton, Dimitry Skylarow, John Johansen cases). The other side is, that anticircumvention is used as a tool (a business model) to exclude competitors. There is this example with Lexmark who said that their ink-software saying "I am empty" is protected and any cheaper ink-supplier is excluded since they may not ignore this tag.

-) Extension of the copyright: DRM prohibits consuming a legally required product (DVD) watching at another continent. That was never part of the copyright agreement.

-) Innovation barriers: since content companies dictate hardware suppliers how to specify their products, the innovative creative is likely to be undermined. Infering from there the consequences for the customer, it becomes obvious that it is inconvenient if you cannot play mp3s or whatever with different appliances. You are technologically locked it (Mako Analysis proclaimed according to Cory that Symbian phones should not be supported since they allow to copy mp3s on the phone, what would put ringtone sellers out of the business!). In general, software and hardware companies are proposing open standards to allow more flexibility and improve customer satsifaction. Here, exactly the opposite happens.

-) New business models (or also social movements) always embrace the medium they live in. The key is convenience for consumers, to do something extra what they couldn’t do before (scalability for instance, reproducing the Bible, using piano rolls, distributing mp3s, ebooks etc). Mostly, they were worse at what the old medium was best at, but the new models offered new advantages for customers/consumers.

Google and salesforce

Interesting comparison (login required) between googles and salesforces IPO. Quite a difference in their marketing budgets: "Marketing and sales expenses are Salesforce.coms largest cost, accounting for a whopping 66 percent of its fiscal 2003 total revenues, according to the companys S-1 filing. Not so with Mr. Brin and Mr. Page. In 2003, the Google spent only 12.5 percent of its revenues on marketing and sales." I wonder if marketing without innovation will survive in the long-run...

Procedural Justice

In one of my MBA-books, they referred to procedural justice without explaining it. I found a website with some useful information about the topic.

Procedural justice is concerned with making and implementing decisions according to fair processes. People feel affirmed if the procedures that are adopted treat them with respect and dignity, making it easier to accept even outcomes they do not like.

So, what makes processes fair. The author suggests the following:
- put emphasis on consistency
- those carrying out the procedures must be impartial and neutral
- those directly affected by the decisions should have a voice and representation in the process
- the processes that are implemented should be transparent

Erklärungen für den Anstieg der Patente

Interessante Studie vom Fraunhofer Institut über die gesteigerte Patentierfreudigkeit vor allem grosser Unternehmen. Interessant auch deshalb, da der Bericht auch auf die Gefahren von nicht innovativen Patenten hinweist, die die Wirtschaft hemmen würden.
Grundsätzlich lässt sich folgern, dass die Bedeutung von Patentanmeldungen zugenommen hat, da die F&E-Ausgaben ungleich weniger gewachsen sind als die Steigerung der Patentanmeldungen. Dies hat mehrere Ursachen, unter anderem:
-) F&E-Effizienz wird oft durch die Anzahl der Patente gemessen
-) interne Leistungsanreize durch verstärkte Patentierungen
-) Absicherung gegenüber der Konkurrenz
-) Steigerung der Reputation des Unternehmens durch Steigerung der Patentanmeldungen

Die Autoren der Studie weisen darauf hin, dass die ursprüngliche Funktion von Patenten - Imitations- und Marktsicherungsschutz - zunehmend verloren geht und statt dessen Patente als Konkurrenzblockade und PR-Instrument gesehen werden.

Die GRI ist ein langfristiger, viele Stakeholder einbeziehender, internationaler Prozess, dessen Auftrag es ist, einen weltweit anwendbaren Leitfaden der Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung zu entwickeln und zu verbreiten. Der GRI Leitfaden ist für die freiwillige Anwendung durch Organisationen gedacht, die über die wirtschaftlichen, ökologischen und gesellschaftlichen Aspekte ihrer Tätigkeiten, Produkte und Dienstleistungen Bericht erstatten wollen. Das Ziel des GRI Leitfadens ist es, berichterstattende Organisationen und ihre Stakeholder bei der Gliederung und dem Verstehen von Beiträgen der berichterstattenden Organisationen zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu unterstützen.

Die Frage, die sich stellt, ist, ob der Rahmen flexibel genug ist, um die unterschiedlichsten Bereiche (von der Erdölindustrie bis zu einem Forschungsunternehmen) abzudecken, als auch konkrete Vorgaben zur Umseztung macht (wie es ja die Rio-Deklaration nicht geschafft hat). Gestern in der Zukunftswerkstatt Mercedes Echerer kennengelernt. Interessante Details zu den Abläufen innerhalb der EU-Bürokratie. Die Sachlage zu den Softwarepatenten war den meisten Anwesenden klar. Interessant finde ich auch die Überlegung, gemeinsam mit RA Georg Zanger in der Umsetzungsfrist der Richtlinie (wenn sie wirklich kommt), das europäische Patentamt in München mit Klagen zuzuschütten (aufgrund der Verletzung vieler Patente mit nationlen Verfassungen).

Frühstücken im Media Tower

Heute ging es um das Thema für Content bezahlen. Besonders die Deliberationen von Gerlinde Hinterleitner (derStandard.at) haben mich sehr verwundert. Offensichtlich wird hier immer noch so agiert, dass ’derStandard’ zu wissen glaubt, was die Benutzer wollen. Ich vermisse jede Art von Strategie beim Online-Angebot. SMS und MMS, WAP sind schon Highlights. Untersuchungen zur Preiselastizität oder Kundenbefragungen gibt es (anscheinend) keine, denn derStandard weiss ja, was die Leute zu zahlen bereit sind. Venture Capital

Terms
If you haven’t been through this process, you might think that the deal would be simple. You agree with the VC that the company’s worth say ten million, and they’re going to give you three million for 30% of the company. It’s not like that. Among other things, most deals are bigger than this, and there’s the issue of ’pre-money’ vs. ’post-money’ valuation, but what’s really material is the Terms that the VCs ask for; these are many and various and worth going into.

Preferred Shares
This is the Term from which all the others follow. You, the founders of the company, own common shares. The VCs, in exchange for their investment, get Preferred Shares which have a bunch of extra rights attached.

Board Seats
The investor group (and it’s nearly always a group, not just a single VC) get one or more seats on the Board. Typically, they don’t want or ask for a majority position. You don’t hear too many gripes about this one; the VCs are often in a position to help out with introductions and they’re likely to have seen a lot of the problems you’re going to have, so VCs on the board isn’t an onerous term, especially if you get one of their senior people.

Reporting
The deal will include a bunch of requirements for you to give your investors regular reports on how the company’s doing. If one of your investors is ’institutional’ (say a bank or a pension fund) you will regularly get requests down the road for more and more detailed and frequent reports as the institutional management tightens the screws on their internal people, but you don’t really have to do anything more than the Investment Agreement calls for.

Ratchet
This is one of the ugly ones. Suppose the VCs have put in their three million. Suppose you don’t do very well and you’re running out of money and you go out to raise some more and the new investors think the company’s only worth five million. A ratchet says that the dollar value of the VCs shares isn’t allowed to decrease. So if the company is now deemed to be worth $5M, their $3M investment is now worth 60% of the company, and youre required to issue them enough new shares to get them there. Of course, this can lead to ridiculous situations when the valuation of the company drops down near or even below the original investment (happened to a lot of companies post-bubble) and the investors end up owning more than 100% of the company.

Liquidation Preference
Let’s go back to the three million dollar investment. The VCs will ask for at least a ’1x’ liquidation preference; that means that if the company is sold or goes public or something, i.e. the shares actually are worth something, then they are guaranteed to get their money back first. That is to say, if you were doing badly and sold it for $5M, they’d get their $3M and the rest of the shareholders split up the remaining $2M. This is innocuous enough; but in recent times some VCs have been demanding ’2x’ or higher liquidation preferences, I’ve direct knowledge of at least one ’4x’ and heard horror stories of even higher numbers.

Tranches
Suppose, once again, you do that $3M deal. The idea of tranches is that instead of giving you all the money up front you get $750K today, then in six months if you’ve hit certain milestones (usually revenue-related) you get another $750K, and then the remaining $1.5M after another six months, once again depending on you meeting your revenue targets. Entrepreneurs hate tranches with a passion, because they know that most successful companies have had changes in direction, which tend to make former milestones irrelevant, and if you miss a target you’ve probably been spending money to get there, so if the tranche ain’t there your back is to the wall and you’re going to have to re-cut the deal to keep the doors open, probably at a lower valuation; and then the ratchet gets you.

Nickels and Dimes
When a VC invests in you, they spend some real money on getting all the contracts and other legal work drawn up and drafted. They don’t pay for this, you do, out of the money they give you. While this doesn’t have the potentially lethal consequences that ratchets and liquidation preferences do, every entrepreneur I’ve ever talked to finds it violently irritating; I thought the idea was that we were supposed to use the money to build a business and succeed, not to pay legal bills.

Terms in Recent History
What happened was, there was a fairly standard set of terms stretching over the years, but then in the late Nineties the entrepreneurs and the VCs both had a case of bad bubble craziness (me too). The VCs and entrepreneurs co-operated in enthusiastically throwing a lot of other people’s money away on stupid ideas. The other people the banks, pension funds, and other flavors of money that fund the VCs got seriously irritated and beat up those VCs that didn’t just shut down."

Neue Institutionenökonomie

oder kurz NI: "sowohl unter vollkommener als auch unter monopolistischer Konkurrenz wird die Einrichtung des Marktes als kostenfrei nutzbare Koordinationsplattform angenommen. Die NI setzt meiner Meinung nach stark auf Robert Coase’s Konzept der Transaktionskosten auf. Interessant auch, dass vor Coase noch niemand die Frage analysiert (und beantwortet) hat, warum es Firmen gibt. Nämlich dann, wenn die Transaktionskosten des Marktes höher sind als die einer (neuen) Firma.

The OECD define three types of interaction associated with citizen engagement (OECD, 2001) that have become widely referred to, namely:
- Information: a one-way relationship in which government produces and delivers information for use by citizens. It covers both passive access to information upon demand and delivers information for use by citizens and active measures by government to disseminate information to citizens.
- Consultation: a two-way relationship in which citizens provide feedback to government. It is based on the prior definition of information. Governments define the issues for consultation, set the questions and manage the process, while citizens are invited to contribute their views and opinions.
- Active participation: a relationship based on partnership with government in which citizens actively engage in defining the process and content of policy-making. It acknowledges equal standing for citizens in setting the agenda, proposing policy options and shaping the policy dialogue although the responsibility for the final decision or policy formulation rests with government.

These distinctions indicate a scale of engagement in policy-making along which government initiatives could be plotted. That is how its authors use it, in reporting that efforts to engage citizens in policy-making on a partnership basis are rare, undertaken on a pilot basis only and confined to a very few OECD countries (ibid.). The scale echoes older ladders of participation (Arnstein, 1969), and the principle continues to be applied when characterising participation, especially in urban planning (eg. Nobre, 1999).
Applying this principle to the OECD definitions above, Macintosh (2004) describes three levels of participation that can be used to characterise e-democracy initiatives:

E-enabling is about supporting those who would not typically access the internet and take advantage of the large amount of information available. The objectives we are concerned with are how technology can be used to reach the wider audience by providing a range of technologies to cater for the diverse technical and communicative skills of citizens. The technology also needs to provide relevant information in a format that is both more accessible and more understandable. These two aspects of accessibility and understandability of information are addressed by e-enabling.
E-engaging with citizens is concerned with consulting a wider audience to enable deeper contributions and support deliberative debate on policy issues. The use of the term to engage in this context refers to the top-down consultation of citizens by government or parliament.
E-empowering citizens is concerned with supporting active participation and facilitating bottom-up ideas to influence the political agenda. The previous top-down perspectives of democracy are characterized in terms of user access to information and reaction to government led initiatives. From the bottom-up perspective, citizens are producers rather than just consumers of policy (Macintosh et.al, 2002). Here there is recognition that there is a need to allow citizens to influence and participate in policy formulation.

Our approach is a hybrid of action research, ethnography and evaluation approaches, inspired partly by Suchman and Trigg (1991). The need in our case is to ground our intervention to improve communication practices, in an understanding of how citizens, their representatives, and planning and communications officers collaboratively accomplish their tasks. Our action research role has been to work with some of those actors in each city to elaborate on and clarify the rationale for change, and to coordinate their work with citizens to understand the requirements for the tools. This work draws on Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) (Checkland and Scholes, 1990) and scenario-based methods (Carroll and Rosson, 1992; Erskine et al, 1997).

Vom Kriege

Die Bosten Consulting Group (sitzt übrigens in München) hat unter dem Titel "Clausewitz - Strategie denken" eine Art Zusammenfassung Clauswitz Werk "Vom Kriege" versucht. Die Idee, grundlegende stategische Überlegungen zum Krieg auch für wirtschaftliche Prozesse relevant darzustellen, ist durchaus gelungen, da dem (ausgesuchten) Orginaltext nur Annotationen bzw. geschichtliche Erklärungen dazugefügt wurden.

Einige Überlegungen von Clausewitz:
- einfach, aber nicht leicht (wie das ja auch von Aristoteles (die Natur wählt den kürzesten möglichen Weg) bzw. von Popper (einfache Theorien sind leichter zu widerlegen) vetreten wurde

Interesting arcticle about an agreement between the RIAA and noncomercial radio-streamers. According to the article, stations "will pay a flat rate of $250 for use of songs in 2003. In 2004, schools will pay $250 or $500, depending on the size of the school's enrollment."

However, there are limitations, such as: "Currently, noncommercial webcasters are limited by the number of songs from one artist they can play during a certain period of time. DJs also cannot play two songs from the same artist back-to-back, and they cannot play more than three songs from a particular album in any three-hour period. Playing more than four songs from one artist during a three-hour window is prohibited."

If a station surpasses 200 simultaneous listeners, they must pay .251 cents per listener, per hour!

Die Berner Konvention, eines der Kerndokumente für die europäische Urheberrechtsdebatte:
"Am 9. Sept. 1886 unterzeichneten zehn europäische Staaten (Berner Union) einen völkerrechtlich bindenden Vertrag zum internationalen Schutz von Werken der Literatur und Kunst (Berner Convention). Im Jahr 1967 wurde die Weltorganisation für geistiges Eigentum (WIPO) gegründet Die Berner Übereinkunft wurde im Verlaufe der Zeit mehrmals berarbeitet und erweitert. Derzeit wird sie den digitalen Medien angepasst (z.B. Urheberschutz für Software).
Mitglieder der Berner Union sind die meisten europäischen Staaten, die USA, Russland und die Volksrepublik China. Sie sind verpflichtet Gesetze zum Schutze geistigen Eigentums in ihrer nationalen Gesetzgebung zu verankern und ausländischen Bürgern von Mitgliedsstaaten die gleichen Schutzrechte wie den eigenen Staatsangehörigen einzuräumen. Dabei gelten Mindestrechte auch dann, wenn sie nicht in der nationalen Gesetzgebung verankert sind (z.B. muss der Urheberrechteschutz mindesten bis 50 Jahre nach dem Tode des Verfassers aufrecht erhalten werden; in Deutschland sind das 75 Jahre).
Da einige Länder andere oder weitergehende Schutzvorschriften haben, gibt es ausser dem Beitritt zur Berner Union noch die Möglichkeit dem Welturheberrechtsabkommen beizutreten. Ihm sind ca. 100 Staaten beigetreten.

VoiceXML vs SALT

Der Streit geht weiter, weiter, ...

Die Frage, die dabei oft gar nicht gestellt wird, ist, was ist denn eigentlich der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Standards? SALT wurde 2002 ins Leben gerufen und zielt auf Webseiten, die sprachunterstützt betrieben werden könnne. Jedoch kann SALT auch für die Erstellung von Telefonanwendungen verwendet werden. VoiceXML hingegen war nur für die Erstellung von Telefonanwendungen konzipiert worden. VoiceXML ist eine neue Beschreibungssprache, SALT eine Erweiterung bestehender. Diese theoretische Trennung wird jedoch immer wieder verwischt und unklar kommuniziert. Erwähnenswert ist sicherlich auch noch, dass SALT von Microsoft unterstützt wird, VoiceXML hingegen vom W3W.

Hostsharing eG betreibt eine Genossenschaft für Internetdienstleistungen. Der Open Source Gedanke wird auf ein konkretes Geschäftsmodell angewandt. Besteht schon seit 2 Jahren. Interessant finde ich die Idee der virtuellen Mitgliederversammlung (vMV). "Die vMV bietet unseren Mitgliedern die Möglichkeit über die in unserer Branche üblichen Diskussionstechniken (E-Mail, Foren, etc.) direkt an wichtigen Entscheidungen der Genossenschaft mitzuwirken ohne persönlich anwesend zu sein. Die Generalversammlung, kann die Beschlüsse der vMV bestätigen oder ablehnen. Diese Regelung ist ebenfalls in einer
Geschäftsordnung verankert. Eine leichtfertige Änderung der Geschäftsordnung ist nicht möglich, da die Zustimmung von der Teilnehmer benötigt wird."

Marabastad

ohne den Herrn Merensky hätte meine Diplomarbeit wohl anders ausgesehen, vor allem Marabastad wäre dann im Titel wohl nicht vorgekommen.

Impressionen aus Marabastad:

Marabastad, like most locations, was an organized rubble of tin cans. The streets were straight, but the houses stood cheek by jowl, rusty as ever on the outside, as if they thought they might as well crumble in straight rows if that was to be their fate. Each house, as far as I remember, had a fence of sorts. The wire always hung limp, the standards were always swaying in drunken fashion. A few somewhat pretentious houses could be found here and there. These were, like the rest, of corrugated iron. But they had verandas paved with concrete, and the pillars were of concrete too. ... The other verandas, where any, were paved with mud, and about four poles supported the roof unevenly. There was only one house which had a flower garden. ... The backyards were always inclined to be dirty, much as the people swept them continually with home-made grass brooms. Most of the houses had a room or two to let out to a family or a single person. So it was not uncommon to find about three braziers blazing away in the same yard. (Mphahlele, 1959: 32).

In der letzten Stadtbauwelt (Sonderheft der Bauwelt) sind sehr interessante Artikel zur Stadtplanung (vor allem in Südamerika) enthalten.
Z.B. für Statistiker: Mexiko-Stadt hat 18 Mio. EW auf 1.3 qkm. Sao Paolo ist von 1870 mit 31.000 EW auf 10 (bzw. 17 inkl. Grossraum) Mio. EW im Jahr 1998 angewachsen.

Geschossflächenzahl: durchs. 1.1 (zw. 0.4 - 2.3), das ergibt 150 200 qm.
