INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN VIENNA
Vienna, Austria, March 18-20, 2010

This international conference will bring together people, organizations and networks who want to ENABLE “game changing” innovation and break down the barriers of the status quo. A multidisciplinary gathering of Doers, Thinkers, Creators, Citizens and Change-makers will be addressing domains such as information technology, design, architecture, sociology, economy, philosophy and city planing in the context of innovation and sustainability.
In close partnership with the international LIFT-network we are expecting brilliant speakers, inspiring talks and fruitful workshops.
The conference will take place in an early 20th century factory building, which is to be transformed into a creative cluster within the next years. This site in transition provides a stimulating environment to introduce novel conference formats which stimulate interaction, learning and the creation of new knowledge. Attendees are to be asked to co-create the convention, so suggest a speech or a speaker!

Was meinen Sie mit einer “echten Idee”?

Das ist ein Gedanke oder eine Idee, die mich so ergreift, dass ich innerlich das Gefühl der Stimmigkeit habe: Das ist es - obwohl ich nicht nachweisen kann, wie genau das geht und weitergeht! Damit meine ich nicht irgendeine spontane Begeisterung oder ein zweckmäßig «kreatives» Engagement. Eine Idee entsteht, dringt durch, wenn man lange und intensiv an etwas gearbeitet hat, die Idee quasi gereift ist - wie ein Apfel, der vom Baum fällt. Immer gilt: Man muss erst losmarschieren, einen Raum schaffen, in dem man viel erleben und erf ahren kann, und dann beginnt man langsam zu merken, was man da eigentlich will. Ich könnte auch sagen: was man soll. Das fällt dann nämlich zusammen. Oft wird heute vertreten, man müsse am Anfang wissen, was man will - aber das ist oft überhaupt nicht möglich. Dieser Ansatz erschlägt geradezu jede Initiative. Wenn man versucht, ein Probleme schon vorher zu lösen, z. B. mit einer schnellen Idee, kommt man nicht zum Erscheinen von Wirklichkeit und nicht zum selbstständigen Gehen.
Dies ist genau unser Verständnis von emergenter Innovation. Das Aufzuspüren, was latent vorhanden ist und diese Potentiale dann in (game-changing) Innovationen zu realiseren.

Roger Martin on the Design of Business
Roger Martin von der Rotman School of Management in einem Gespräch über analytisches und intuitives Problemlösen:
The march of science is good, and corporations are being run more scientifically. But what they analyze is the past. And if the future is not exactly like the past, or there are things happening that are hard to measure scientifically, they get ignored. Corporations are pushing analytical thinking so far that it’s become unproductive. The future has no legitimacy for analytical thinkers. New ideas must come from a new kind of thinking. The American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce called it abductive logic. It’s a logical leap of the mind that you can’t prove from past data.

Fliegende Klassenzimmer
Die Akademie der bildenden Künste und die TU Wien haben uns eingeladen, bei der Konzeption des Jahresmuseums “Fliegende Klassenzimmer” mitzuwirken. Wir haben uns auf den “Feedback-Prozess” konzentriert. Freue mich schon sehr darauf, die konkrete Umsetzung zu sehen und erleben. Am 13. November wird die Ausstellung in Mürzzuschlag eröffnet.
Die Räume, in denen wir lernen und lehren, haben sich seit über hundert Jahren kaum verändert. Nach wie vor ist das Klassenzimmer im Format von 9 × 7 m der vorherrschende Ort eines im Stundenrhythmus getakteten Unterrichts, obwohl sich PädagogInnen und ArchitektInnen einig sind, dass zeitgemäße Unterrichtsprinzipien vielfältiger sind und entsprechende Raumformen brauchen. Das Thema der Ausstellung ist die Wechselbeziehung zwischen dem architektonischen Raum und dem Lehren und Lernen. Sie richtet sich an alle, die direkt oder indirekt mit Bildung und ihren räumlichen Rahmenbedingungen zu tun haben, vor allem an SchülerInnen, LehrerInnen, Eltern, ArchitektInnen und PolitikerInnen. Sie bietet die Möglichkeit, sich über die Entwicklung des Schulbaus und deren Hintergründe zu informieren, den Umgang mit Raum in 1:1-Installationen spielerisch zu erforschen und eigene Visionen für die “Schule der Zukunft” zu entwickeln.

Creating Innovation, 19.10.09
Ich bin vom Joanneum Research eingeladen worden, die Konferenz Creating Innovation durch einen Beitrag mitzugestalten. Am Nachmittag des 19. Oktober 09 von 13.30 bis 16.00 finden diese Sessions - als “Innovative Speed Tables” bezeichnet - statt.
In dem von mir gestalteten Speed Table (“Sinne schärfen für das latent Neue”) geht es um radikale (oder game-changing) Innovation und dem Zusammenspiel mit Rahmen- und Randbedingungen, die diese Innovation unterstützen und ermöglichen. Folgende Fragen werden dabei unter anderem exploriert:
- Wie kann eine Kultur der radikalen Innovation in der Organisation verankert werden?
- Welche Faktoren sind hierbei essentiell und welche Unternehmensbereiche müssen berücksichtigt werden?
- Kann radikale Innovation systematisch “organisiert” werden?
- Wie sieht ein innovationsfördernder Rahmen aus?
“Sinne schärfen für das latent Neue” impliziert, dass das Neue von Innen heraus nämlich von den beteiligten Personen kommen muss. Was gibt es jedoch für Techniken, damit wir unsere eigenen mentalen Modelle aufbrechen und offen für das Neue werden? Auch dieser Fragenkomplex wird angesprochen werden.
Ich freue mich auch, Eric Pöttschacher, Gründer von shapeshifters, wiederzusehen.
Die Veranstaltung findet am 19. Oktober 2009 im Tagungszentrum Schloss Schönbrunn statt.

VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Talks
Together with my colleague Markus Peschl (University Vienna) we will talk at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK at the Pratersauna in Vienna on Friday, October 9. Our talk is titled “Innovation as Design | Design as Innovation” and will explore common principles of the Emergent Innovation approach and a design-oriented process.
Roberto Verganti (Politecnico di Milano) will give a keynote. Most probably related to his new book.

Social Innovations
I have been invited by the Erste Foundation participating at the Thinking Social Activism workshop. The goal of the gathering was:
The idea is to establish a network of activists and concerned people and to give them innovative tools for social activism. We want to provide a virtual space where practitioners all over Europe can communicate, share information and knowledge, as well as rally support and organise collective action.
It was a well-considered setting and the working atmosphere was productive. I couldn´t stay until the end, so I cannot comment on the actual outcomes. But see for yourself.

Netflix Award
Netflix, the movie rental company, has decided its million-dollar-prize competition was such a good investment that it is planning another one.The BellKor team won the $1 Million Prize. The last days were exciting, since the last 30-days (when the BellKor team announced that it had reached the targeted improvement rate) new team emerged trying to beat the BellKor team. More on this in The New York Times.
I still believe in the power of such crowdsourcing processes. However, companies must not mistake such initiatives with marketing fakery (just today I read in this context: Wie man die Nutzer zum Innovationsmotor heranzieht). Too many enthusiasts have been disappointed. Rightly. In the majority of cases, the most difficult part is the internal commitment. Otherwise, one division organises such a process, and after that the whole thing is dead. This does more damage to a company than not engaging in crowdsourcing at all.

Gratulation an österreichische Innovatoren/Unternehmer!
Mindmeister schaffen es mit ihrem Mind Mapping Tool in den App-Store in die ausgezeichnete Rubrik “Neu und beachtenswert”. Im Rahmen vom CCAlpsSalon haben Michel Bauwens etc. mit dem Visualisierungswerkzeug die verschiedenen Dimensionen von Open Everything visualisiert, hat sich gut bewährt.
